Thursday, September 23, 2007 The past few months, the Center for the Study of Christianity in Conflict has been pursuing inquiries into the hundreds of thousands of cases of sexual abuse of children by Roman Catholic priests in Latin America from the 1950s to the present day. The Latin American focus of the project is in part an extension of work conducted by CSCC that began after the CSCC received a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship in the summer of 2005. The foundation’s grant focuses on the contemporary and historical impact of the Church in Latin America. While the study includes elements of the analysis of the modern Catholic Church, the foundation has not funded a graduate degree program. Each of the 13 case studies involves between 40,000 and 100,000 individual pages of documents. By itself, this project presents a formidable challenge, and necessitates the development of new skills in several areas. The proposed methodology includes a full-text search of multiple bibliographic databases for Latin American material. The most extensive search will be conducted on the ProQuest database, with at least 5 other Latin American databases being used for backup purposes. To facilitate the study of these documents, an ongoing project at CSCC is developing a database of Latin American lay and clerical victims of the Church’s sexual abuses, which encompasses both cases of sexual abuse and cases of child pornography. By the end of June 2007, the database contained over 3,000 cases. On-going analysis of each of the open cases in the database will provide additional insights into the dynamics of the sexual abuse of children by Roman Catholic priests in Latin America.
